The Atlantic Jazz Collective is a trio of JUNO Award-winning artists from Canada’s Atlantic Region: saxophonist Mike Murley, bassist Jim Vivian, and pianist Florian Hoefner. Murley and Vivian recently returned to Halifax and St. John’s after decades in Toronto, while Hoefner moved from NYC to St. John’s in 2014. Born from the Atlantic Jazz Nights concert series, the Collective’s mission is to promote jazz in Atlantic Canada and beyond through international collaborations. No stranger to the BJP living room, for their debut project, the Collective has teamed up with UK vocalist Norma Winstone and legendary drummer Joe LaBarbera. Both have shaped modern jazz with iconic recordings, including Winstone's work with Kenny Wheeler and LaBarbera’s contributions to Bill Evans’ Grammy-winning We Will Meet Again.
The quintet’s first recording, Seascape, will be released on May 2, 2025, featuring reimagined pieces by jazz greats like Maria Schneider and Steve Swallow, with Winstone’s original lyrics added.
