Mike Allen's "Just Like Magic" Trio: Two Shows This Sunday!

Vancouver's Mike Allen (tenor saxophone) will be appearing at Calgary's BuckingJam Palace this Sunday, October 20th for two shows (2pm & 8pm). Joining Allen for these performances will be the world-renowned rhythm section team of Lewis Nash (drums) and Peter Washington (bass).

This trio will be performing music from Mike Allen's latest CD release "Just Like Magic" (Cellar Live). Featuring a program of Allen's originals and timeless standards, these special concerts will truly be memorable moments in the Calgary Jazz community for years to come!

Thank You Harold Mabern!

Master Jazz pianist Harold Mabern has died at the age of 83. It was reported today that he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in New York City. A prolific artist, Mabern performed with the greatest Jazz musicians in the world over the course of a lengthy career and inspired several generations of students as a teacher at William Paterson University.

Patrons of BuckingJam Palace will recall his amazing recent April 2019 performance in Calgary featuring Harold playing so beautifully on the new Yamaha grand piano.

Harold's presence on and off the bandstand was an inspiration to all who those who had the opportunity to play music with him and hear him perform.

A New Season of Jazz at BuckingJam Palace!

Welcome to the BuckingJam Palace blog!

On the heels of last year's successful and sold-out season, we are only a month away from the beginning of yet another exciting season of amazing jazz concerts here at BuckingJam Palace.

We'll be blogging here on a regular basis from now on, offering updates on upcoming concerts as well as in-depth features and interviews with the world-class artists that will be performing at Calgary's hippest jazz venue.

Here's a taste of what's coming up at BuckingJam Palace in the coming months:

Saturday, October 5th (two shows: 2pm & 8pm) - Mike LeDonne's Groover Quartet

B3 Hammond organist Mike LeDonne brings his New York quartet to Calgary for a rare appearance featuring Eric Alexander on tenor saxophone, Peter Bernstein on guitar and Joe Farnsworth on drums. This band has been performing  at New York's Smoke Jazz club on a regular basis for many years now and will be sure to bring its polished and hard swinging New York sound to Calgary for two special shows to launch our 2019-20 season.

Thursday, October 10 (8pm) - The Hoffman-Lemish Quartet

Pianist Noam Lemish and guitarist/oud player Amos Hoffman are long-time collaborators and their music features unique interpretations of traditional Jewish folk melodies through a contemporary Jazz lens.

Sunday, October 20 (two shows: 2pm & 8pm) - Mike Allen with Peter Washington & Lewis Nash

Vancover tenor saxophonist Mike Allen brings his all-star trio to Calgary featuring bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash, perhaps one of THE most prolific bass/drum teams in modern Jazz times. Do NOT miss this opportunity to hear three Jazz masters up close and personal. Allen recently released his album Just Like Magic on the Cellar Live label with this band and these two shows will certainly be just that...Jazz magic!

Friday, November 1 (8pm) - Jodi Proznick's Sun Songs

Following her recent 2019 Juno nomination in the Best Vocal Jazz category, Vancouver bassist and composer Jodi Proznick will perform music from her acclaimed album Sun Songs featuring vocalist Katherine Penfold.

Saturday, November 9 (8pm) - Lorna MacLachlan

Local pianist, vocalist and composer Lorna MacLachlan brings her quintet to BuckingJam Palace, celebrating the music from her most recent release Bicycle Riding in the Dark.

The Igor Willcox Quartet is coming to BJP!

Meet The Band

Igor Willcox Quartet is formed by Igor Willcox (drums/compositions), Vini Morales (electric piano/synth), Wagner Barbosa (saxophone) and Glecio Nascimento (bass) featuring elements of jazz, funk and fusion.

The group – which plays original compositions, exploring all musicality, spontaneity, and sinergy – has achieved great notoriety in the instrumental music scene, standing out and performing in the most important festivals and Brazilian Jazz clubs such as Bourbon Street, Sescs, Santos Jazz Festival, São Paulo Jazz Festival, Play Jazz Festival, Jazz no Hostel, Jazz nos Fundos, etc.

In April / May of 2019 the group has already confirmed a Canada tour, where it will be performing at the most important jazz clubs in the country, such as the legendary Yardbird Suite, The Jazz Room, Frankie’s Jazz, & BuckingJam Palace.
